It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of natural beauty and skin care products, so I was really excited to be invited along recently to the Abu Dhabi launch of two new products from cult natural brand Rahua Beauty: a 100% natural dry shampoo and a natural hairspray.

If you’ve missed all the fuss and the latest celebrity ‘must-have’ chat and are wondering what this Rahua stuff is, let me tell you – Rahua has been a secret of Amazonian women for centuries, a botanical oil they prepare with super restorative powers and the secret of their own healthy, thick, shiny and smooth hair. And long story short, the secret is finally out and available to us non-Amazonian women, hurrah!

I first came across Rahua about a year ago when I tried out their Voluminous Shampoo and Conditioner for the first time, and though I liked it, I didn’t really understand at first what all the fuss was about. But, as you’ll see if you check back to my original review, I had to go back and update my original thoughts some time later after having persisted and used the products more consistently. What had seemed like a perfectly ‘nice’ product suddenly seemed to transform my hair and I finally got it… I understood the hype and became a convert! And chatting to the Rahua experts at the recent launch, they explained that this is exactly right – they always tell people that they need to use the shampoos for at least a week to see the best results and this is especially true for those transitioning from non-natural products. The reason for this is that traditional silicone based shampoos coat the hair and weigh it down and when you start using natural products, it takes time for the chemical build up to be removed and for the hair to adjust to the new product. And rather than coating the hair, Rahua natural products actually penetrate deep into the hair to bond, repair and smooth… So bear with it in the early days, it will improve and the wait will be worth it!

So I’m always excited to hear about new natural products in any form, and I’m not gonna lie, as a new mum with a young baby – dry shampoo is one of my routine staples on busy days so hearing there’s now a 100% natural alternative on the block (from such a great brand) is excellent news. And it’s soooo natural, it’s almost good enough to eat (but maybe don’t try that)! And perhaps the most important part is that it works too, you’ll be pleased to know! It’s a non-aerosol squeezy bottle and when I first saw it I was a bit worried it might be hard to get the aim right and the powder might go everywhere, but it’s easy and absorbs really well so you don’t get that halloween white hair look!

Meeting the experts

And I’m not a huge user of hairspray because I really hate that hard feeling some of them leave you with (not to mention the effort of actually, erm, needing to style my hair first!), but this doesn’t do that at all. It offers a good medium hold to help keep fluffies at bay and help a gentle wavy style (read: natural, minimal effort!) keep its shape longer which is a result for someone like me who likes things to be as quick and fuss free as possible! I can’t be doing with standing around styling and coiffing for ages, I just don’t have the time (or the patience!).
For hardcore natural aficionados it should be noted that the hairspray is 90% natural but still totally sulphate free. Oh, and another thing worth noting for we sand-dwellers, is that it uses green tea antioxidants to offer UV protection and protect hair and scalp – now there’s a bonus.

Rahua is a high-end brand so this luxury does come at a price with the dry shampoo priced at Dhs220 and the hairspray Dhs250, but it’s no more expensive than its frequently used non-natural luxury competitors and I don’t know about you, but if I’m going to get a bit spendy, I’d rather do it with products that I know I will work (with very little effort on my part – always a bonus, hurrah!) and that aren’t seeping dangerous chemicals into my body and bloodstream!

Rahua products are available at House of Fraser, Yas Island in Abu Dhabi and Plethora Hair Lab (hot off the press: new location coming soon to Tyrano in Yas Mall!), Posh by Feryal at the Burj Al Arab and Address Downtown in Dubai and online at Basharacare.com.
